Pediatric Dentistry

Although children lose their first set of teeth, frequent visits to our dental practice are important to maintaining good oral health and establishing healthy dental habits early in life. Our compassionate office provides a kid-friendly atmosphere where children feel loved and welcome. Dr. Lam and our team have extensive experience working with children to ensure their comfort and safety.

When a child’s first tooth begins to emerge, parents should schedule a dental examination. For children’s first dental exams, Dr. Lam will look for any congenital and developmental abnormalities. Around five years old, children should receive their first dental cleaning. Dental cleanings are the perfect opportunity for our team of hygienists to explain methods for proper oral hygiene in a fun and memorable way for our younger patients.

In addition to routine checkups and cleanings, Dr. Lam also provides pediatric services such as fillings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants. Fillings address small areas of decay and prevent further damage to teeth. Children are especially susceptible to developing cavities because of sugary drinks and the ongoing development of teeth—especially teeth with deep pits and grooves that are difficult to clean.

Because sugary drinks and acid contribute to the erosion of the protective barrier surrounding teeth, tooth enamel, sometimes fluoride treatments are necessary to prevent tooth decay.

Tooth enamel is comprised of strong minerals and with exposure to acid over time, enamel loses its strength. As enamel becomes worn down, the interior portions of teeth are unprotected from harmful oral bacteria. To help prevent further enamel loss, fluoride treatments are applied to the teeth in the form of a pleasantly flavored gel or foam. Fluoride strengthens enamel by replenishing minerals.

Like fluoride treatments, dental sealants are a non-invasive way to help prevent tooth decay. Sealants are applied to the back teeth in liquid form and cured with a special dental light. Because molars have grooves and fissures that are difficult to keep clean, sealants help children maintain a cleaner mouth.
